“Poverty is
not the lack of material resources but the lack of dreams.”
Dr. Vincent Muli Kituku
I deeply acknowledge and appreciate the power of a dream in
ways the English language cannot describe. Dreams are not only
the seeds for success, but also the hope for a fulfilling
future. One of my dreams as a youth in Kangundo, Kenya was to
own and wear a watch.
A watch was the epitome of success. To the best of my memory,
I cannot recall seeing any of my elementary school teachers
wearing a watch in the 60’s and 70’s. The people I saw wearing
watches were priests, health care specialists and
professionals with jobs in Nairobi (the capital city) who came
to our community from time to time.
 |
For whatever reason, the image of a watch
on my hand stubbornly stayed in my mind until I decided to
do something about it. When I was in the sixth grade, I
picked and cut a piece of paper, drew the two arms of a
watch and wrote the numbers. I put that paper in a throw
away bottle-top and a rubber band served as the wrist
band.
That unreal watch brought a sense of achievement in an
unfamiliar way. I looked forward to the day I could own a
real watch. The chances of owning one were dismal.
|
My father, who believed shoes, long pants and
entertainment industry products were dream busters, wasn’t a
source of hope for my dream. However, he had an amazing way of
rewarding superb academic performance. I requested a watch for
my reward when I passed the exam given to students after the
first 4 years of high school (Kenya used to have 4 years of
ordinary high school and 2 years of advance high school).
I still have that watch Dad gave me in 1979. I still see the
face of the Indian businessman who brought it from Nairobi and
explained to both my Dad and I that the watch didn’t need to
be wound everyday—it was automatic!
The impact of the dream of owning a watch dominated my
thoughts a while ago as I realized that I have had customized
watches and wall clocks in my office for several years. Yes,
there is a water buffalo and Kituku & Associates logo on the
watches and clocks. There is no substitute for dreams.
Hope is the fuel that keeps your dream on the path to
fruition, especially in the formative days, months or years of
your dream. Probably the most prevalent dream I have heard
many people say they want to achieve is to write. Many want to
write a book. Others want to be columnists while others just
want to write something about their experiences. It is
astonishing to think of how their dreams are quenched by lack
or limited hope. I read the steps one needs to follow to get
their column in a newspaper in 1996. I had no clue what to
write about and if I would be able to write an article every
month. I went to the publisher/editor a local weekly paper
with a circulation of 1000. He read my African folktales and
accepted to print them with basic terms—no pay for me. I wish
he could know that the greatest pay was to keep my hope
kindled.
Within a year or so, the paper was bought by someone else who
shared with me the desire to have an inspirational column. I
gladly accepted the challenge. Unknown to me, the new editor
was related to a publisher/editor of a bigger daily newspaper
publisher in another state. That out-of-state editor read one
of my articles, called and requested me to write a weekly
column for $10/week. I almost called to tell my wife, “Honey,
don’t add water in the dinner soup. Business is really looking
up.”
A few weeks later, a newspaper in Texas wanted my weekly
articles. Christian publications and business magazines
followed. Medium to large organizations now use those articles
in their organization’s newsletters.
Every dream needs hope, action and persistence. |

The response, readers calling or emailing for the
inspirational/educational
t-shirt, was astonishing. We have decided to extend the offer
three more weeks. This will allow those who had not ordered
their t-shirts to do so. Again, while the message transcends
age, culture and professional endeavors, it is the 5th to 12
grade students that have crowded our booths and stopped our
sales people in public areas just to get a t-shirt that has a
life changing positive message, with a call for action-angle.

Last week I finally got around to doing something I’d been
procrastinating for a year. It took ten minutes, max! Done,
finito, off my brain, off the oh-so-long “To Do” list. Out of
those 2 a.m. conversations I have with myself about how much I
have to do.
And now, a year later, I can benefit from that simple little
ten minute task. Why didn’t I do it last year, you ask? I’LL
TELL YOU WHY—because I couldn’t find ten minutes to spare. My
life is already quite full, thank you.
And why is that? Possibly because from time to time, waiting
in the doctor’s office, during a meal alone, I sneak a peek at
that dreaded object, a women’s magazine. There I learn HOW I’M
SUPPOSED TO SPEND MY TIME.
Those articles give handy suggestions for improving our lives
that take only minutes a day! What they don’t say, however, is
that those minutes add up. I’ve done an informal study of the
time of my life that you might find entertaining. It certainly
made me think.
Task (followed by minutes it takes): Brush teeth twice a day
(6), Floss (3), Shower (15), Make-up (10), Yoga stretches (5),
Walk (30), Meditate (15), Tidy house (15), Weight training
(15), Write in my journal (5), Read paper/Internet news (20),
Quality pet time (10), Pay bills/manage budget/open mail (15),
Back exercises (10), Email (30), Cook meals (30), Listen to
spouse (15), Listen to kids (15), Cart kids (40), Grocery shop
(30), Dishes (20), Commute (40), Work (480), Sleep (480)
Total Minutes 1344 = 22 hours and 34 minutes
Okay, these estimates include some time commitments you might
not have. I no longer have to cart kids, and the listening
time is occasional now that my daughter has left home. But
remember that I didn’t even allocate time to catch your breath
between activities, to get to the gym or the store or to
garden or shovel snow or….eek!
You get the picture. There’s a lot to do and we all have the
same 24 hours to do it in. There’s not much time left over for
hobbies, volunteer activities, socializing with friends,
enriching our lives. And none at all for TV! No wonder so many
of us find ourselves rushed and stressed, cutting ourselves
short of sleep and even falling ill.
What to do?
|
|
 |
Recognize the stress you’re putting
yourself under. |
 |
Realize you can’t do it all. Few can. |
 |
Review your priorities. Are you doing
what’s most important to you and to your family/life?
To the world you live in? |
 |
Re-structure: can you eliminate
unnecessary activities and spend more time doing
what’s important…to you? |
 |
Be ready to say no. And say it. |
 |
Remember that this is your life and is
something to be enjoyed, not endured. Take time to be
silly, to sing, listen to music, crunch through fallen
leaves, whatever gives you joy. |
 |
Rip up those magazines! Seriously, take
all that advice with a grain of salt and reflect on
what you want to do to improve your health, your
finances, your life. |
|
|
And just in case you’re wondering about that simple task? It was to
complete an application to our management association to have a
patio awning installed so we could enjoy barbecues on our patio on
hot summer nights.

Before you read what you will learn or the dates and times for
the last seminar of 2006, take a moment and read what Clay
Corner, a participant in the last seminar said. Here it is:
“Hi Vincent,
I just wanted to share with you how blessed I was this week by
your seminar. The difference between Wednesday and today is
that I now know:
1. That it is OK to get paid to speak
2. How to understand and engage my audience to create amazing
results
3. How to market my services 24 hours per day
Thank you. It was worth a fortune.
I gladly committed to the next level of training and look
forward to learning and applying all that I can. Just to let
you know, I have received a bargain and would have easily paid
twice or more of this amount or more for your services.”
Just a note—Clay is an accomplished national consultant
with years of training in public speaking.
Dear fellow speaker, what do you make of a case like Jennifer
Christiano’s. Jennifer got results from what she learned
immediately. She attended the seminar and in three business
days (seminar ended on Saturday), Jennifer appeared in the
Idaho Statesman (100% free of charge!). In addition to the
description of her accomplishments and services, her picture
was also printed. This was just one of the tips Jennifer
picked up from the seminar. Here is what she wrote after the
seminar: “Vincent,…it
was truly an experience that will enhance not only my career,
but also my life in general , even my marriage. The marketing
information you shared with us alone was worth many, many,
times the financial investment I made to attend…you are truly
an “Angel Along the Path” who is making a tremendous positive
difference in my life.”
“Dear Vincent,
I can't thank you enough for the opportunity to attend your "How
to Speak and Get Paid" advanced workshop this past week!
Your willingness to share your "tips" "strategies" and "must
knows" of professional speaking was invaluable. The stories
and examples made it obvious that every bit of advice had been
time-tested as you learned the business.
More important than just the practical information though, was
the sincere encouragement you always offer. It is a reminder
that success in a field we are passionate about must be shared
to make us truly successful. Thank you for your warmth and
wisdom!
All the Best - Always!”

There is one thing I guarantee
my students—you will learn practical tips that will allow you
to propel your fulfillment (success is not only elusive but
also very deceiving) into new heights. You will live
consciously aware of why you do what you do, the impact it has
on the lives of other people’s professions or personal
endeavors and the tangible and intangible rewards you derive.
Further, you will learn how to speak so that people want to
hear you and pay (very well) for your words. The second part
is to teach you how to let people know what you do faster
without you investing thousands of dollars. In fact, I teach
participants how to market with a zero budget…that is where I
started and still use it.
NOW here is information about the seminar. We have
about 40% of the participants already registered. DO NOT
WAIT!
This course is designed for participants who want to get paid
as professional speakers/trainers or consultants. You will not
only learn your speaking strengths, but also how to make them
financially profitable. Not everyone QUALIFIES for this
course. It is for professionals who are want to make a SIX
figure income, and have fun doing it.
