There are times when we feel our talents, gifts or experiences don’t provide us with the life we want. We think if only we had such-and-such, life would be better. People leave towns for better ones. We leave jobs in search of better pay or more reasonable bosses. Unfortunately, some people leave their spouses and/or children in search of better relationships elsewhere.

It is not unusual for people to even ignore the potential they have, while searching and laboring for something that may not materialize. This reminds me of a story I included in my article, "What's in Your Hand."

It is about a man in Africa who had a large piece of land. He heard people were getting rich by selling diamonds. He decided to sell his "worthless" piece of land and go look elsewhere for diamonds.

As the new owner walked around his land, he saw unfamiliar stones. He picked one up and placed it in his hut. Years later a friend of the new owner came to visit and saw this stone. The visitor inquired where the stone had come from and this landowner told him about the unfamiliar stones on his land. The visitor knew that the unfamiliar stones were diamonds. This land had the largest amount of diamond ever discovered. The first landowner never found diamonds where he went and regretted for not exploring what had been available to him for years.

In my article I stated, "Our diamonds are not out there somewhere. They are within us. We need to explore and excavate them, then put them to use."

Before you leave your own backyard, here are some tips that may help you find the "diamond" within.

1.)

Come to terms with your past.

What has stopped you from living up to your potential? What are the things you wish you could be doing but you’re not doing right now because of your past?

2
.)

Dig for the diamond within.

What skills, gifts and experiences do you have that you can use right away in order to grow professionally and personally? What do you do with such a passion that you can do it for no monetary returns? How do you spend your days? When the day is over, is there something about which you can say, “I am looking forward to tomorrow to do it over again?"

3
.)

Time out!

Get to a quiet place and ask yourself what really matters in your life. What's worth devoting your time, efforts and resources to?

4
.)

Develop a road map.

Set goals that are clear, attainable, measurable within a certain time. Set goals that can get you to dig and use the "diamond in your backyard"

5
.)

Recruit helpers.
Share your goals with those people who believe in you and will encourage you to dig your "diamond" even when they can't see your "tools." The key is to look and listen to what they are saying and ask lots of questions.

6.)

Be honest.

There is unimaginable power in being honest with oneself. It's that honesty that leads you to humble yourself and be teachable.

7.)

Be patient.

There is no drive-through to professional and personal success. Dig and dig…it is the digging process that makes the rewards enjoyable.

8.)

Have faith.

Believing what eyes can't see maintains your determination to dig deeper and wider until the diamond is brought to the surface.

It’s seems odd to think of essential element for planning our future goals in middle of the year. However, for professional and personal growth, we must constantly remind ourselves of the essential elements that move people ahead and start working on them or strengthen them if we are already busy building our dreams.

1.)

Know yourself and determine your mission. If you know yourself, others wouldn’t have the chance of tailoring you according to expectations that might stifle your potential. To live and work with fulfillment one must know what he/she would rather accomplish than anything else in the world.

2
.)

Use the otherwise ignored or underused great source of power and inspiration—faith in God. It provides inspiration, will power, and determination to do what is good in pursuance of one’s mission.

3
.)

Know and develop positive traits, both of character and personality. What is that in you that makes people want to talk with you, work with you, play with you and pass on what you say or do to their loved ones? Hone and let those traits work for you, all the time.

4
.)

Love and serve people. "What we do for ourselves can get us by. What we do for others is what gets us ahead; whether in our profession, spiritual pursuits or relationship." Learn to ask, “Is what I am doing helping someone?” instead of asking, “What’s there for me?”

5
.)

Work. Work hard. Work to succeed. Work for fun, growth and to leave a legacy. Put your life’s mission plan into action by using all you have got to accomplish all you must.

No one should ever attend a live livestock auction without knowing the rules.

In early spring 1989, our daughter was born in Laramie, Wyoming. My Kamba (Kenya) traditional inclination was to welcome her to this world the best way I knew how—prepare a goat that is shared with family and close friends. A friend, who offered to accompany me, let me know that my best option was to visit a livestock auction in Fort Collins, Colorado. It was a 60 miles drive.

We arrived at about 10:00am, albeit with a huge obstacle. None of us had ever attended an auction of any kind in Africa or America, thus we lacked the basic body language gestures expected in auction functions. Suffice it to say that, while we could understand and speak English, we didn’t know or prepare for the English version used by professional auctioneers.

When you say or do nothing at an auction, no one bothers you or knows the depth of your knowledge of what’s going on. I had left home with a purpose and doing nothing or being silent was not in my list of options. After several groups of goats were paraded and then taken offstage without my friend or I understanding what had happened to them, I couldn’t hold my peace any longer.

At about 2:00pm, I noticed another group of goats. It was time to act in the way I knew—lift my hand and ask when I have a question. What happened next revealed how the lack of a particular trade’s knowledge can be costly to both sellers and buyers. My lifted hand was noticed at a wrong time and was misinterpreted. It was the final call for a $2,500 horse, and my hand was the last body gesture noticed by the auctioneer. My monthly allowance that supported two adults, a 5 year old daughter and the new baby was $750.

Let your imagination go as you figure my reaction when a young lady came with forms for me to fill out before I paid the horse. My hand was still up since the auctioneer had not given me the opportunity to ask my question…what is the price of a castrated goat? I explained to the lady why my hand was up and that horse had to be brought back.

We left for Laramie at 5:00pm without a goat even after the facility designated someone to help us with what was being said whenever a goat was being auctioned. But by the time we had processed what the helper was saying, the goat was already taken offstage.

The following week, I shared my experience during animal physiology class. Professor James Waggoner took solving my predicament as his personal mission. He was already running a small cow-calve operation that occasionally needed goats to provide milk for calves.

That cowboy professor not only went to the auction to get a goat for the special tradition but also would become the provider of goats to my family until we left Wyoming. Mind you those were provided to us at cost. I introduced other African students to this professor who incorporated educational course work with a caring spirit that catered to our cultural practices on foreign soil.

Life, in many situations, is beautified by those mundane considerations we pay attention to in the lives of those around us. Most of us will go to our graves eternally grateful for Prof. Waggoner’s positive consideration and contribution to our lives as we struggled to adjust in a new cultural environment.
